The pictures basilaris is in fact a form of Opuntia aurea. Has nothing to do with basilaris except that it can also be spineless.

Cold hardy opuntioids inside the unheated greenhouse, check:

There are some good articles about Lithops and frosthardiness in Cactus and Succulent Journal 20 years back. Many species survived -18C. I will see if I can find the reference when I have the time. It was in Texas but the article referred to an unusual cold winter with more than just a night time te...

But the flowers are not particular interesting. http://www.northern-nursery.dk/images/Opuntia07/op%20c.JPG They are not selffertile and I have yet to find another species to hybridize it with. The plant is hardy to dry - 10C. It survives briefly below but looses the stems. However, they will grow ou...

Why only a subgroup of the dkg? Why not a whole society for growing exotic plants outside in europe. Cacti, bananas, agaves, yuccas, mesembs, there are so many species and families to chose from. We would need a whole magazine on our own.

I would say that its too early. You risk getting malformed pads on the plants. Remember these are high altitude plants and N European weather in February will never give good plant developement. Mine will start grow in April.

Most of my Trichodiadema collection have been down to at least -8C without any problems. I believe that many are much hardier than that, at least for shorter periodes of time. Time will tell, appearently we dont get any real winter this year either.

Mesembs in generel are by far the most interesting group of plants! You have some really wonderful pictures of Conos. I am only sorry these plants cannot tolerate frost, but I seriously consider taking in some of the frost hardy lithops.

Thank you for all the pictures!

I had an old houseplant clone surviving in the open at -8C, but it dies at -10C, dry or not.

But I also have seedlings from plants collected at high altitues in Lesotho that survives the cold Denver winter down below -20C.

Maybe I have just been unlucky. Anyway, with 10-15 new locations on hand, there ought to be some that will germinate, I will expose them to the real warm section of my germination table next summer.
