Re: Micropuntia blüht

Growing these are rather easy:
Use a very sandy/gravel mix, no organic material.
Use a claypot where the water can travel through.
Only water when its warm and sunny.

And then no problems. Only one species is currently recognized. Micropuntia (Grusonia) pulchella.

Its 28 years ago and the understanding of these species have changed a lot since then. O basilaris aurea is today a synonym of O aurea. These are not related. The problem is that often information is just reproduced and not evaluated. Anderson did so in his big book the cactus family, accepting O au...

Cotyledon orbiculata

This one is an almost alpine form, garden tested in Denver, Colorado to around -25C, but dry cold, you can only grow it in the unheated greenhouse in w Europe. http://images33.fotki.com/v1073/photos/1/1421395/6901920/Cotyledonorbiculata1-vi.jpg http://images115.fotki.com/v686/photos/1/1421395/690192...

Talking about basilaris, here is the form called longiareolata, with huge long pads. But the flower is stunning:

First of all, let me come with a few points to consider before I ansver. I dont think anyone is an opuntia expert unless they have seen a lot of habitat plants. I have not been in opuntia-land. the reason is that most opuntioid species are extreamly viable in habitat. You can watch some of the mista...

First of all, these are really stunning plants! The other thing is that the so called O basilaris nana is no basilaris at all but instead O aurea. You can see it on the stigma that is green in aurea but are never green in true basilaris. These are often confused. Another example is the hardy form fr...

Doesnt matter what you grow them in. I have had it growing in anything from pure sand to torf. I have kept it a whole growing season in very wet soil, and in more dry soil. Its an easy plant.

The small red leafed white flowered D alpina from Sani pass is among the most cold hardy mesembs at all. However, its not particular happy for wet winters and despite a cold hardiness potential to at least -35C, winter wet can kill it. The other form called Sani Pass has yet to get a proper identifi...
